How to Download Instagram Videos (Every Device, 2026)

6 min read By

Instagram is built for watching, not keeping. There’s no big “Download” button on most posts, and the Save icon only bookmarks a video inside the app, so it disappears the moment the creator deletes it. If you want a real file on your phone or computer, you need one of the methods below. This guide shows how to download Instagram videos on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac, which method keeps the best quality, and what to do when a video won’t save.

The quick answer

Copy the video’s link in Instagram (tap the paper-plane Share icon, then Copy link), paste it into the Instagram video downloader and tap Download. The video saves in HD with sound, on any phone or computer, without logging in. Instagram’s own Download button also works, but only on some public reels and it adds a watermark.

A link downloader is the most reliable way because it works for regular videos, reels, carousels and IGTV-style long videos, and it keeps the original quality Instagram stores.

  1. Open the video in the Instagram app or on instagram.com.
  2. Tap the Share icon (paper plane) and choose Copy link. On a computer, copy the address from the browser bar.
  3. Open the TapDL Instagram video downloader in your browser.
  4. Paste the link into the box and tap Download.
  5. Pick the quality you want. HD is the best version Instagram has, usually 1080p.
  6. On iPhone, tap Save Video in the share menu. On Android and computers, the file goes straight to your Downloads folder.

That’s it: no app to install and no Instagram login. If the post is a carousel with several clips, every slide shows up and you can save them one by one or all at once.

Method 2: Instagram's own Download button

Instagram added a built-in download option for reels from public accounts. When it’s available, it’s the quickest way:

  1. Open the reel and tap the Share icon.
  2. Look for Download in the row of options at the bottom.
  3. Tap it, and the reel saves to your phone’s gallery.

There are three catches. The button only appears if the creator allows downloads (they can turn it off in their settings), it doesn’t exist for private accounts or regular feed videos, and the saved file carries an Instagram watermark with the creator’s username. Some reels that use licensed music don’t offer the button at all.

Method 3: Save your own videos

For videos you posted yourself, Instagram can keep a copy for you:

  • Before posting: on the editing screen, tap the download arrow at the top to save the finished reel to your phone.
  • After posting: open your reel, tap the three dots and choose Download or Save to device (the label depends on your app version).
  • Automatically: go to Settings and activity → Archiving and downloading and turn on saving posted photos and videos to your camera roll. Every future post is saved as you publish it.

If you lost the original file and the Download option is missing, paste your own post link into the downloader. It works the same way for your posts as for anyone else’s public ones.

Method 4: Screen recording (last resort)

Screen recording works for anything you can play, but the quality is lower and you capture the app’s buttons too.

  • iPhone: open Control Center, tap Screen Recording, play the video, then stop the recording. The clip lands in Photos.
  • Android: swipe down twice, tap Screen recorder, choose to record media sounds, then play the video.

You’ll need to trim the start and end afterwards. Use this only when a link downloader can’t reach the video.

Method 5: Download your whole Instagram account

If you want every video you’ve ever posted, request a full copy of your data instead of saving posts one by one. It’s slower, but it includes your videos, photos, stories and messages. We walk through it step by step in how to download your Instagram data.

How to download Instagram videos on each device

iPhone and iPad

Open the downloader in Safari, paste the link and tap Download. When the share menu opens, tap Save Video and the clip goes straight to the Photos app. If you only see “Save to Files”, the video lands in the Files app under Downloads. Our guide on saving reels to your camera roll covers this in more detail.

Android

In Chrome, paste the link, tap Download, and the video saves to your Downloads folder. It appears in Google Photos under Collections → On this device → Download, and in Samsung or Xiaomi Gallery in the Download album.

Windows PC and Mac

On a computer, Instagram blocks right-click saving, so a link downloader is the easiest route. Copy the address of the post from your browser, paste it into the Instagram video downloader and click Download. The MP4 file goes to your Downloads folder and plays in any video player.

Why won't my Instagram video download?

  • The account is private. Downloaders, including TapDL, can only see what’s public. Ask the creator to send you the file.
  • The link is wrong. Copy it again from the Share menu. Links to profiles or hashtag pages won’t work, you need the post or reel link.
  • The video was deleted or archived. If you can’t watch it in Instagram while logged out, a downloader can’t fetch it either.
  • It’s a live video. Lives can only be saved by the host while they’re live or as a replay they share.
  • The download opens a page instead of saving. On phones, make sure you’re in Chrome or Safari, not inside the Instagram app’s built-in browser, which blocks downloads.

Is it okay to download Instagram videos?

Saving a public video for yourself to watch offline is common and generally low-risk. Reposting it, editing it into your own content or using it commercially is different: the creator owns the copyright, so ask permission and give credit. We break the rules down in can you download Instagram videos. This isn’t legal advice; if you plan commercial use, check with the creator first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download Instagram videos without an app?

Yes. A browser-based downloader like TapDL works in Safari, Chrome or any desktop browser. You paste the link and save the file, with nothing to install.

Does the person know if I download their video?

No. Instagram doesn’t notify creators when someone saves a public post through a link downloader, a screen recording or the built-in Download button.

What quality are downloaded Instagram videos?

You get the quality Instagram stores, usually 1080p for reels and up to 1080p for feed videos. A downloader can’t make a video sharper than what was uploaded.

Can I download Instagram videos from a private account?

No. Private posts are only visible to approved followers, so no downloader can reach them. Ask the account owner to share the video with you.

Where do downloaded Instagram videos go?

On iPhone they go to Photos (or Files if you chose Save to Files). On Android and computers they go to the Downloads folder.

Can I download just the audio from an Instagram video?

Yes. Use the Instagram audio downloader to save the sound of a reel or video as an MP3 file.
