Bluesky vs Twitter (X): Which Should You Use?

4 min read By

Bluesky and X (formerly Twitter) look almost the same: short posts, replies, reposts, likes and a scrolling timeline. Underneath, they’re built on very different ideas. This guide compares Bluesky vs Twitter (X) feature by feature, so you can decide where to spend your time, or how to use both.

The short version

  • Choose X if you need the biggest audience, live sports and breaking news from every corner, or you rely on X’s creator payouts.
  • Choose Bluesky if you want control over your feed and moderation, fewer ads and bots, and a friendlier, more chronological experience.
  • Many people use both: X for reach, Bluesky for community.

1. Audience and reach

X is still much bigger, and it has the widest mix of people: politicians, sports, celebrities, crypto, news and niche communities. Bluesky is smaller but very active in certain groups: journalists, academics, scientists, writers, artists, tech and progressive politics. If your audience already moved, Bluesky can feel busier than X for your niche.

2. Feeds and algorithms

  • X: the For You tab is controlled by X’s algorithm, which favors engagement and Premium subscribers.
  • Bluesky: you pick your algorithm. Use the chronological Following feed, Bluesky’s Discover, or thousands of custom feeds made by users for specific topics.

3. Verification

On X, a blue check comes with a paid Premium subscription. On Bluesky:

  • Notable accounts get a blue check from Bluesky.
  • Organizations can become Trusted Verifiers and verify their own people.
  • Anyone can set their website domain as their handle (for example @nytimes.com), which proves ownership.

4. Moderation and safety

Bluesky combines central moderation with tools you control: mute words, block lists you can subscribe to, and independent labelers that tag content so you can hide or blur it. X relies on its own rules plus Community Notes, crowd-written context added to misleading posts.

5. Ads and money

X shows ads in the timeline and pays eligible Premium creators a share of ad revenue. Bluesky has no ads in the main feed and no creator payouts yet; it plans optional paid features (Bluesky+) while keeping the app free.

6. Video

X lets free users post videos up to 140 seconds, and Premium users much longer ones. Bluesky raised its limit to 10 minutes in 2026. Neither app has a built-in download button. To save a clip, copy the post link and use the Bluesky video downloader or the Twitter video downloader.

7. Privacy and openness

Everything you post publicly on either app is public. Bluesky is built on an open protocol, so your posts are part of a network other apps can read, and you can move your account to another provider. X is a closed platform. Both offer private direct messages; neither is end-to-end encrypted by default for everyone.

8. Features X has that Bluesky doesn't (yet)

  • Long posts and long videos for paying users
  • Spaces (live audio)
  • Creator payouts and subscriptions
  • Communities and Grok AI built in

9. Features Bluesky has that X doesn't

  • Custom feeds and starter packs
  • Domain handles
  • Subscribable moderation (labelers, block lists)
  • Account portability on an open protocol

  3. Post your Bluesky link on X so followers can find you.
  4. Search starter packs in your field and follow them.
  5. Pin a few custom feeds for your interests.
  6. Before leaving X, download your archive: Settings → Your account → Download an archive of your data.
